A Simple Experiment

Those screenshots you just saw show nearly 1500 searches per month on Google for a new dentist in Bondi Junction. And that was for just two rather obvious search phrases. How many more can you think of? (“new dentist bondi junction”, “best dentist in bondi junction”, dentists bondi junction reviews”, etc.)

So now I’d like you to do this simple experiment:

Step 1. Go to Google.com.au

Step 2. Enter search phrases that people would use to find your type of business online.

So, for example, if you’re a plumber and you live in Geelong, type in “plumbers in geelong”.

Then, play around with a few variations, e.g. “best plumber geelong”, “geelong emergency plumbing”, “24 hour emergency plumber south west melbourne”, etc.

Note: You may find your business name appearing even if you don’t have a website. That’s because business directories like Hot Frog and True Local put your details on their websites for free and try to upsell you to “premium” packages. (This option could be worth investigating. Just remember, though, it’s not your “online real estate”. It’s theirs.)

For now, this little experiment is simple: Are your competitors showing up with their own website?

What does that mean for your business?
